Cutting Mat Calculator — Workspace Sizing
Find the right cutting mat size for your workspace and typical project sizes.
How We Calculate This
Recommends a standard self-healing cutting mat size from your desk dimensions. The target mat spans about 70% of each desk side (the Desk Coverage Ratio), then rounds down to the nearest stock mat that fits. Because 70% per side ≈ 0.7 × 0.7 ≈ 49% of the desk area — and rounding to a standard size trims it further — the reported area coverage is typically 35–50%, leaving a margin of bare desk for your keyboard, paints and reference material. Your working scale floors the recommendation: 1:35 armour and 1:24 kits are sized up to at least A2 when the desk allows.
Standard Sizes
- A4: 300 x 220mm — Compact, for small desks
- A3: 450 x 300mm — Minimum recommended
- A2: 600 x 450mm — Ideal for most modellers
- A1: 900 x 600mm — For large workspaces
