What size cutting mat do I need?

A3 (450x300mm) is the minimum for most modelling. A2 (600x450mm) is ideal for 1:48 and 1:35 scale work. A1 (900x600mm) is best if you have the desk space, especially for scratch-building and larger kits. Buy the largest mat your desk can accommodate.

Are self-healing mats worth the extra cost?

Yes. Self-healing mats close up after cuts, maintaining a smooth surface and lasting years. Non-healing mats develop grooves that deflect your blade. Buy from reputable brands (Olfa, Tamiya) — cheap mats warp and do not self-heal properly.

Should I get a printed grid or plain mat?

A printed grid (1cm or 1 inch squares) is very helpful for measuring and cutting straight lines. Metric grids are most useful in the UK. Some mats have both metric and imperial markings. Angle markings (30, 45, 60 degrees) are also useful.

How do I care for my cutting mat?

Store flat — never roll or stand on edge. Keep away from direct sunlight and heat. Clean with mild soap and water. Rotate the mat periodically to distribute wear. If it warps slightly, soaking in warm water and flattening under weight may fix it.
