Frequently Asked Questions
The No.11 fine point blade is the most versatile — it handles cutting, trimming, and light scribing. Keep a stock of them and change frequently. A sharp blade is safer than a dull one because you need less pressure.
Change the blade as soon as it stops cutting cleanly — typically every 30-60 minutes of active cutting. Dull blades require more pressure, leading to slipped cuts and injuries. Buy blades in bulk (packs of 100) for economy.
The Swann-Morton No.3 handle is the UK standard for fine work. X-Acto No.1 (American) is similar. For heavier work, use a No.4 handle with larger blades. Rubber-grip handles reduce fatigue during long sessions.
Surgical scalpel blades (Swann-Morton 10A, 15) are incredibly sharp and excellent for fine work. They are thinner than craft knife blades, so they cut finer lines. However, they are less robust and not suitable for heavy cutting or prying.
