Panel Line Calculator — Surface Detail at Scale
Work out panel line widths and spacing for realistic surface detail at scale.
How We Calculate This
Scales real-world panel gap widths and panel dimensions to model scale, then calculates the number of lines needed.
Formula
- Scale gap = Real gap width / Scale ratio
- Scale panel size = Real panel size / Scale ratio
- Vertical lines = Surface length / Panel width - 1
- Horizontal lines = Surface height / Panel height - 1
Frequently Asked Questions
Real aircraft panel gaps are 1-5mm wide. At 1:48, a 3mm gap scales to about 0.063mm — extremely fine. The finest scriber tips (0.1mm, 0.15mm, 0.2mm) produce lines that are slightly overscale, but they look correct from normal viewing distance and hold a wash well. Do not chase exact scale width; perfectly-to-scale lines would be invisible and actually read as toy-like.
Use a scribing tool (Tamiya, Hasegawa, or homemade needle) and Dymo tape as a guide. Make multiple light passes rather than one deep cut. Use a steel ruler for straight lines. Scribing tools with interchangeable blades offer different widths.
WWII aircraft panels are typically 400-800mm square. Modern jets have larger panels, 600-1200mm. Access panels are smaller at 200-400mm. Check three-view drawings and walkaround photos for your specific aircraft.
Fill the incorrect line with liquid putty or thin CA glue. Sand smooth when dry. Re-scribe the correct line. You can also use stretched sprue pressed into the groove. Prime the area to check the repair before painting.
