Session Planning
- Build hours = Sub-assemblies × Hours per sub-assembly (set by complexity tier)
- Paint hours = Build hours × Paint scheme multiplier
- Total hours = (Build hours + Paint hours) × Experience × Perfectionism
- Work sessions = ⌈Total hours ÷ Session length⌉
- Drying days = ⌈Estimated coat count × Dry time per coat ÷ 24h⌉
Total calendar time includes both working sessions and drying wait time. Use drying days to work on other sub-assemblies or prepare next steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Break the build into sub-assemblies that can be painted separately. Plan sessions around drying times — paint one sub-assembly, let it dry, work on the next. This maximises productive time.
Most modellers find 1.5–2.5 hour sessions optimal. Shorter sessions lose too much time to setup. Longer sessions lead to fatigue and mistakes. Take breaks when doing detail work.
The general order is: clean parts, assemble sub-assemblies, fill and sand, prime, paint, gloss coat, decals with setting solution, optional gloss seal, weathering, final assembly, then a final matte or satin coat. Apply a gloss coat BEFORE decals — a smooth glossy surface prevents silvering (trapped air under the decal film); the matte or satin coat goes on last to restore the scale finish. Paint interiors and hidden areas before closing assemblies.
