Project Cost Calculator — Total Build Budget
Estimate total project cost including kit, paints, tools and aftermarket parts for your next model build.
How We Calculate This
Simple addition of all cost categories to give you a complete project budget before you start building.
Formula
- Paint Total = Number of paints x Cost per pot
- Materials Total = Glue + Filler + Sundries
- Subtotal = Kit + Aftermarket + Paints + Tools + Materials
- Contingency = Subtotal x (Contingency % ÷ 100)
- Grand Total = Subtotal + Contingency
Frequently Asked Questions
Include the base kit, any aftermarket detail sets (photo-etch, resin, decals), all paints and thinners, glue, filler, sandpaper, and any new tools you need to buy. Many modellers forget consumables like masking tape and cotton buds.
A basic 1:72 aircraft kit might cost £15-£30 all-in. A detailed 1:35 armour build with aftermarket can run £80-£150. A large 1:32 aircraft with full detail sets can easily exceed £200. Paints and consumables typically add 30-50% to the kit price.
Only include tools you need to purchase specifically for this project. If you already own a full toolkit, leave the tools cost at zero. Some builds require specialist items like rigging tools or specific drill bits.
Buy paints in sets rather than individually, use generic brands for primers and clears, scratch-build detail parts instead of buying aftermarket, and look for kit deals at model shows. Sharing paint sets with club members also helps.
