Understanding Scale Conversion

Scale conversion is the foundation of all model making. Whether you are building a 1:72 aircraft, a 1:35 tank, an OO gauge (1:76) railway layout, or a 1:700 waterline ship, every dimension on your model is the real-world measurement divided by the scale factor. Our calculators handle the maths so you can focus on building.

For linear measurements, dividing by the scale factor is straightforward. But areas scale by the square of the factor (a 1:72 surface is 1/5,184th of the real area) and volumes scale by the cube (1/373,248th at 1:72). Speed scales linearly, but the visual effect at model size means a 1:72 scale jet moving at scale Mach 1 would only be travelling at about 15 km/h on the tabletop.

Common modelling scales include 1:72, 1:48 and 1:32 for aircraft; 1:35 and 1:72 for armour; 1:350 and 1:700 for ships; OO (1:76), HO (1:87) and N (1:148/1:160) for railways; and 28mm (roughly 1:56) for wargaming miniatures. Our mixed scale calculator lets you convert directly between any two scales without intermediate steps.
