UK OLE Standards (Scaled)
- Contact wire height = 4800mm / Scale ratio
- Mast spacing = 54000mm / Scale ratio (straight track)
- Mast count = Track length / Mast spacing + 1
- Wire sag = Mast spacing / 40
Frequently Asked Questions
UK nominal contact wire height is around 4800mm (the design figure sits within the 4.7–4.9m range). In OO gauge (1:76.2) this scales to approximately 63mm above rail level. The catenary wire (support wire) sits about 10mm higher. Ensure consistent height along the route for realism.
Real UK masts are spaced 54-72m apart on straight track. In OO gauge this is 710-950mm. On curves the spacing is closer. For model railways, even spacing looks best — choose one distance and stick to it.
Most OO gauge modellers use non-functional catenary for appearance only. Working overhead wires are complex and unnecessary for DC or DCC operation. If modelling electrified routes, focus on realistic-looking masts and wire heights rather than functionality.
Use 0.2-0.3mm brass or nickel silver wire for the wires. Commercial masts from Sommerfeldt (German) or scratch-build from brass rod and etched parts. In N gauge, 0.1mm wire or even stretched sprue can work for the contact wire.
