Photo-Etch Calculator — PE Detail Set Planning
Estimate CA glue and time needed for photo-etch detail sets.
How We Calculate This
Estimates CA glue consumption and working time based on PE part count, size and complexity.
Formula
- CA glue = Part count × Glue per part (by size)
- Working time = Parts × Minutes per part × Complexity factor
- Total time = Working time × Prep & Cleanup Factor (default 1.3 = +30%)
- Bottles = Glue needed ÷ 20 ml (rounded up, minimum 1)
Bottle count assumes a ~20 ml (≈20 g) hobby CA bottle — typical formats run 0.5 oz (~15 ml), 1 oz (~30 ml) and 2 oz (~60 ml); adjust the cost-per-bottle field to your actual bottle. The glue-per-part and minutes-per-part figures are rough planning estimates, not manufacturer data — a single CA drop is ~0.03-0.05 ml and PE joints use sub-drop amounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Use thin CA (cyanoacrylate/superglue) for most PE parts. It bonds metal to plastic instantly. Apply a tiny amount with a fine applicator or toothpick. Avoid poly cement — it does not work on metal. For large PE panels, consider slow-setting CA for repositioning time.
Use a dedicated PE bending tool (like The Hold and Fold or a Trumpeter PE bender). For simple bends, use two flat-nosed pliers. Always bend along etched fold lines. Practice on spare PE before working on critical parts.
Yes. Metal PE parts need an etch primer or at least a light coat of metal primer to ensure paint adhesion. Standard plastic primers may not grip bare metal well. Spray a light coat of etch primer on the fret before removing parts.
A typical 50-part PE set adds 4-8 hours to a build. Complex sets with folded parts and intricate assemblies can add much more. Budget 3-5 minutes per small part and 8-15 minutes per complex folded part.
