Decal Calculator — Decal Application Planning
Plan decal application with setting solution and softener quantities for perfect results.
How We Calculate This
Gives a rough planning estimate of how much setting solution, softener and gloss coat a decalling session will use, plus typical soak and drying times. It is a buying/stocking guide — these products are brushed on by eye, not metered, so treat the volumes as ballpark figures, not a precise dose.
Estimate (heuristic, not a published spec)
- Setting solution ≈ Decal count × 0.1 ml × Size factor × Complexity factor
- Softener ≈ Setting solution × 0.6
- Gloss coat ≈ Decal count × 0.3 ml × Size factor (only if the surface is matte)
The 0.1 ml / 0.3 ml per-decal figures and the size factors (small 0.5, medium 1.0, large 2.0, extra-large 3.5) are our own bench-derived heuristics for stocking up — there is no manufacturer or standards figure for “ml of Micro Set per decal”. For scale, a single 30 ml (1 oz) bottle of Micro Set or Micro Sol comfortably covers many models, so even a busy build only sips from the bottle. Tweak the per-decal values in Advanced Options to match how heavily you brush.
Frequently Asked Questions
Setting solution (like Micro Set) helps the decal adhere and reduces silvering. Softener (like Micro Sol) melts the decal film to conform to surface detail. For flat surfaces, setting solution alone may suffice. For riveted or complex surfaces, use both.
Yes, always. Decals applied to a matte surface will silver badly. Apply a gloss coat, let it cure 24 hours, then apply decals. After decals are dry, seal with another gloss coat, then apply your final matte or satin finish.
Small decals: 10-15 seconds. Medium: 15-25 seconds. Large: 30-60 seconds. Extra-large (full-body stripes, carrier decals): 45-75 seconds. These are starting ranges, not exact figures — lift the decal when it slides freely on the backing paper but before it floats off. Over-soaking dissolves the adhesive and invites silvering. Use lukewarm (not hot) water; hot water shrivels the film.
Silvering is caused by air trapped under the decal film. To prevent it: apply over a gloss surface, use setting solution, prick any air bubbles with a pin, and apply softener to melt the film down onto the surface. Work from the centre outward.
